Grow 5 pounds of food. Start wherever you are.
#5PoundGardenChallenge A garden that produces 5 pounds of food is infinitely better than a garden that is never planted.
Grow 5 pounds of food. Start wherever you are.
INTRODUCTION
The goal of the 5-Pound Garden Challenge is simple:
Grow 5 pounds of food from something you planted and cared for.
It might begin with one tomato plant on the porch, cucumbers beside a fence, potatoes in a bucket, beans in a small garden bed, or several different plants whose harvests add up over time.
There is no registration, no deadline, no leaderboard, and no perfect garden required.
Plant something. Harvest what grows. Weigh it. Keep a running total. Celebrate every ounce along the way.
The challenge is especially meant to encourage people who have never grown food before—but experienced gardeners are invited too.
Start small. Learn while you grow. Reach 5 pounds. Then help the next gardener get started.
Start from seed, buy a plant start, or grow a plant someone gives you.
Grow it in the ground, in a raised bed, in a container, on a porch, on a balcony, or wherever you have room.
2. Harvest and Weigh It
Your 5 pounds can come from one plant or several different plants.
You do not have to harvest all 5 pounds at once.
3. Keep a Running Total
Six ounces counts.
One tomato counts.
A handful of beans counts.
Keep adding each harvest to your total until you reach 5 pounds.
4. Share If You Want To
Use: #5PoundGardenChallenge when sharing publicly on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or other social platforms.
You can also share directly in the public Facebook group.
Sharing online is completely optional. Your harvest counts whether anybody sees it or not.
5. Pay It Forward
When you reach your first 5 pounds, keep growing.
Come back next growing season and do it again.
And help somebody else believe that they can grow their first 5 pounds too.
SEE WHAT THE CHALLENGE IS ABOUT
Bowtie David introduces the 5-Pound Garden Challenge, how it works, and the idea behind encouraging people to simply plant something and begin growing food.
Shawnee explains the challenge from a gardener`s perspective, including small harvests, indoor growing, setbacks, successes, weighing the harvest, and sharing the whole journey.
JOIN THE COMMUNITY
The public 5 Pound Garden Challenge Facebook group is a place to share what you're planting, your progress, questions, first flowers, harvests, setbacks, successes, and your running total.
If you are a creator, please feel completely free to use these graphics in:

You do not need to ask permission.
The 5-Pound Garden Challenge is meant to grow beyond any one channel or creator.
Take it into your own community. Talk about it in your own way. Share your own first 5 pounds. Highlight the gardeners in your community who are participating. Celebrate their planting, their first flowers, their first harvests, their setbacks, their questions, and eventually that moment when they realize:
“I grew 5 pounds of food.”
That is what this is about.
If enough creators keep encouraging just one more person to plant something, we can help create gardeners who may never have started otherwise.
Please use the official hashtag when sharing publicly:
#5PoundGardenChallenge
And if you are directing people here, the group name is:
5 Pound Garden Challenge
The challenge may have started with Bowtie Life, but it is absolutely bigger than Bowtie Life.
Spread it as far and wide as you want. Make it part of your community. Help somebody grow their first 5 pounds.
Then encourage them to help the next gardener do the same. ?
